Brian:
It would have been more interesting if you had asked him to re-do the code and to make the changes you'd specified. Then, more than just a fair comparison of the quality of his work, you could also have gauged the quality of the communication between you and him. Even though you didn't need him to do the work any more, it would have been interesting, since you'd already paid him and everything.
One of my prior jobs had an offshore development house (wholly owned by the small company I worked for). The biggest problem we faced was developer communication. We in San Diego had to trust the man heading up the house overseas completely for day-to-day management, and he had a disagreement with the boss about what his responsibilities were and left with a dozen or so of the programmers. When we had issues to discuss, we had to wait until the next business day to hear back from them. We set up a VPN, but they were limited to 128kbps DSL -- ever try doing Windows ActiveDirectory (a technology meant for LAN speeds) encrypted over a VPN with multiple machines sharing a 128kbps connection? Ouch. Also, in this instance the programmers were not as good as what you'd get coming out of a major US University with a CS degree, although about what you'd expect for someone with an EE degree. _________________ Rimbosity -- Light your brain farts. http://www.rimbosity.com/ |
