Sorry to come late to this party, but just wanted to say that the more experience I get, the more I agree with Brian on this one - C++ solves exactly the *wrong* problems.

Then there's the proliferation of scripting languages. In some cases (Unreal), virtually all actual gameplay code is scripted, while the C++ does rendering and networking.
